Benny Hinn – False prophet or insane madman?

I’m a Christian from Scotland who belongs to the Free Church of Scotland – a very traditional, no music, no hand-clapping/dancing kind of church.

A few days ago I saw something on youtube i’d never seen before – this man called Benny Hinn doing something called “slaying in the spirit”. He was hitting people; pushing them over; hitting them with his jacket – and all the people would collapse on the floor. Some of them would convulse wildly. I did a bit of research and it turns out this Benny Hinn chap is rather famous and there are many people who call him “a false prophet” and others who simply say he is a fraudster and a cheat. Some investigation by an American news channel found that he hadn’t actually cured anyone and that these ‘collapsing people’ were simply volunteers.

What are people’s opinion of him? I don’t know much about it.

I have heard him speak in person, exactly once.

It was in 1994 at the church he pastored, at the time, in Orlando, Florida, not too far from Disney World. Well perhaps 30 to 45 minutes north of Disney World.

I was there with my son who was not yet a teenager.

I was sitting in the 2nd row, on my left, Mrs. Benny was sitting, and my son was sitting on my right.

At the conclusion of the service, Benny asked my son, something like this:

“Well young man, what did you think of the service?”

My son replied something like this:

“Why did you knock all those people down?”

Benny was rather surprized with that reply and he started to explain what being slain in the spirit was all about.

My son interupted Benny and said, “I’m the son of a Pentecostal Preacher and I know what being slain in the Holy Spirit is, what I just saw wasn’t it!”

Then my son added in something like this, “Your as weird as a 3 dollar bill!”

Benny and his wife, quickly left.

During that service, Benny gave the following prophecy:

“God told me that just like God gave Elisha a double portion of the spirit of Elijah, God is going to give me a double portion of the spirit of Oral Roberts and the proof of this is that God is going to call Oral Roberts home to be with the Lord this year. We aren’t going to put this prophecy on TV until AFTER it has been fulfilled.”

Benny also added, if this does not happen “its time to get out the rocks.”

Well guess what? Oral Roberts did not die until JUST last year, Dec 15, 2009. More than 15 years later!

Please keep in mind, the quotes I used above are my best memory of what happened that day, I do not claim these quotes are exact, my memory is good, but NOT that good.

Within a year of that event, or perhaps I should say, before the end of that year, Benny resigned as Pastor of that church and moved to another state since he did not want to be around a year later since Oral’s health was pretty good.
