Why do some Christians think rock music is evil? ?

I grew up in a a very strict Christian home. My mum and step-dad banned rock music! Can you believe that! As a teenager I soooo wanted to go to discos, school socials, have tapes and cd’s like my friends, but I wasn’t allowed. Reason: Its the devils music…evil. All about sex and killing yourself…LOL
WHAT??? Some music does have those things in it, but its just a song, and LOADS don’t.
Anyway, i was miserable as a teenager as everything was banned. Movies were vetted…
Please explain why my mum did this to me?

I can believe it. I grew up in a fundie home, too. My mom did that to my brothers and I too when we were kids and it made us miserable.

She was especially hard on me since I was the oldest. She wouldn’t just forbid us to listen to music that had inappropriate lyrics, it was all music. She believed what her backwoods hick preacher screamed every Sunday–”all music that isn’t gospel is a tool of the devil!” So were movies, girls/women wearing pants, ad nauseum–the typical fundie load of sh!t.

My mom’s fanaticism had caused me to be a misfit, a target for school bullies, and completely friendless. Then she blamed it on me! She had no choice but to become more lenient when I gave up trying to fit in and retreated more. My dad finally realized that she was too controlling and gave me some freedom, whether she liked it or not. She also eventually realized that I had common sense enough to know appropriate from inappropriate. My brothers had to rebel just so they could fit in. I should have done that, maybe I wouldn’t have alot of the problems I do now. My brothers are perfectly fine.

My point is that some people take religion too far. When they do, it damages other people. Sometimes permanently.
