Play the Piano by Ear – Gospel Music Tips For Beginners
It is not that easy to play piano at the church. There are quite many things to learn at a short span of time and you have to cope with that. There may be instances where you will be requested to play along with singers on some songs that you have never heard or tried playing before. They may expect a lot from you making you play at a certain level or skill that you haven’t attained yet. You will have to undergo much stress especially if you are just having a head start. The following tips can be very helpful to the beginning piano players of Christian or Gospel songs.
Piano playing requires as much knowledge as you can get and you have to know what you are doing as a beginner or even an expert pianist. It will be hard to play a song that you have never heard before. You may be able to key in something that sounds just like that but if you have no idea about what category of music you are apt to play then you are limiting yourself on doing these things. There is more to that and you yourself have to discover what will make you play freely and go out of those boundaries. If you are interested to learn playing Christian songs, then you should go and hear every Christian or Hill songs that you can find from Amy Grant, Israel Houghton and Michael W. Smith. Same with the Gospel music; the Mighty Clouds of Joy, Tye Tribbett and Kirk Franklin. There are many Gospel groups and if you are really serious in learning it, you have to know and research about older gospel groups and their songs.
What I wanted to drive out is that you should get to know every touch or changes in the chords that is the trademark of that music category. You can easily add spice to the music if you know what composes these songs. And you have to know what type they are. Another important thing that you must be aware of: Do not be troubled if you came across someone who plays better than you. Other people are often uncomfortable when they see others who play some techniques that they can’t do. You just have to take it positively by observing what they do and add it to your own skills. You will always find many pianists better than you, but as long as you keep on knowing new things, you will always gain improvements and continue to be better and better.
Piano playing is not about being the best. It is more of knowing how to express yourself through the music that you create. Every melody you make must create feelings. Just like the worship songs, every praise you give to the Lord shows in every note you tackle. It is the best language when no words seem to come out during prayers. Expressing one’s self is what every pianist should learn.
